Community Rallies Behind Squamish Survivor After Miraculous Escape from 40-Metre Plunge

A Squamish resident named Vratislav “Vrato” Durech is in a critical condition after surviving a harrowing 40-meter fall while ice climbing in Colorado. Accompanied by his wife, Durech embarked on an ice climbing expedition in Colorado, where he tragically plummeted approximately 130 feet in January.

Despite the severity of his injuries, including multiple facial fractures, a shattered femur, a broken heel, and a fractured shoulder, Durech miraculously managed to survive. Currently hospitalized in the intensive care unit in Grand Junction, Colorado, his friends and loved ones are rallying to bring him back home to Canada.

His close friend Pierre Carret, who hails from Jasper, Alberta, is leading efforts to raise funds for an emergency medical flight back to Canada, with a target of $50,000. Carret, deeply shaken by the incident, recounts the disbelief and shock upon learning of Durech’s near-fatal accident.

The challenges extend beyond arranging the medical flight, as Durech’s travel insurance does not cover the costs due to the nature of ice climbing being considered an extreme sport. Moreover, the exorbitant healthcare expenses in the United States pose a significant burden on the situation, with anticipated bills nearing a staggering one million U.S. dollars.

Despite the immense financial strain, Carret emphasizes the outpouring of community support as a beacon of hope amidst the adversity. The unwavering solidarity and fundraising efforts from friends and well-wishers have been commendable, reflecting a united front in aiding Durech’s recovery journey.

As the fundraising efforts continue, the collective goal is not only to facilitate Durech’s return to Canada but also to cover the extensive medical treatments and the loss of income resulting from the accident. The community’s response has been remarkable, with approximately $88,000 raised thus far to support Durech and his family during this challenging time.
