Three foreign nationals, Harjot Singh, Taranveer Singh, and Dayajeet Singh Billing, were arrested in Surrey, British Columbia on charges related to gunfire outside a home. The suspects, aged 19 to 21, were apprehended by patrol officers following reports of shots fired in Surrey’s Crescent Beach neighborhood. The trio has been charged with discharging a firearm and are currently in custody until Thursday.
The arrest was made as part of Project Assurance, an anti-extortion initiative aimed at combating violence in targeted neighborhoods. The suspects, who were taken into custody after attempting to flee in a ride-hail vehicle, are foreign nationals, prompting engagement with the Canada Border Services Agency for potential additional charges.
Surrey has witnessed a surge in shootings and extortion-related incidents in recent weeks, prompting Mayor Brenda Locke to urge the federal government to address the issue as a national emergency. In response, the federal government announced the deployment of 20 additional RCMP officers to combat the escalating violence, with plans for helicopter support as well.
With over 30 reported shootings and extortion cases in Surrey this year alone, the British Columbia Extortion Task Force is actively investigating 32 cases across the Lower Mainland. The situation remains a pressing concern for law enforcement and local authorities as efforts continue to address and curb the rising trend of extortion violence in the region.
