Two Vancouver city councillors, Pete Fry and Sean Orr, are urging their fellow councillors to support a proposal to prohibit U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents from entering the city during the upcoming World Cup. Fry and Orr argue that the presence of ICE agents is unnecessary and could potentially exacerbate issues.
Expressing concern over the deployment of ICE agents during the Winter Olympics, Fry emphasized the importance of preventing similar occurrences in Vancouver. He highlighted the negative repercussions, including protests and boycotts, associated with ICE involvement in various sectors and regions.
Fry emphasized that the proposed ban is a proactive measure to avoid controversies and aligns with Vancouver’s values of multiculturalism and diversity. The motion is scheduled to be presented to the council on Feb. 25.
