City officials admitted to an error that led to a nearby commercial space being transformed into residential use, leading to a string of issues for the century-old venue, including noise complaints, fines, and legal battles.
Although the city’s actions to rectify the situation were welcomed by La Tulipe’s owners, they express that the repercussions have already taken a toll. The dispute, originating in 2019, resulted in legal battles that forced the venue to cease operations, exacerbated by pandemic-related closures. The owners have incurred substantial legal fees, lost revenue, and now face the financial burden of mandatory upgrades such as soundproofing, staff rehiring, programming, and restoration work on the historic building.
Furthermore, while the neighboring property received financial compensation, La Tulipe did not, prompting the venue’s owners to seek support from various government levels to secure the necessary assistance for the venue’s revival and its cultural significance in Montreal.
