Several individuals have been taken into custody in connection with a violent incident that occurred at a basketball match at Eric Hamber Secondary School on Monday.
The school community received an official update through a letter from Principal Jason Lauzon, as reported by 1130 NewsRadio.
Principal Lauzon stated, “Our school staff is actively investigating the incident. Should any students be found to have been involved, appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken in line with our commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful environment.”
Law enforcement authorities are currently carrying out a thorough inquiry into the altercation that transpired during a game between Eric Hamber and Killarney Secondary School.
Following the game, altercations erupted, leading to an 18-year-old male sustaining a stab wound to his arm. He was promptly transported to a medical facility for treatment of his severe injuries.
Additionally, there have been reports of at least one other individual sustaining injuries during the incident.
Although the exact motive behind the attack remains unclear, Sgt. Steve Addison mentioned, “It appears that tensions escalated between the two schools during the high-stakes match, which had playoff implications.”
In response to the incident, there has been an increased presence of law enforcement personnel and Vancouver School Board officials in the area. Nevertheless, Eric Hamber Secondary School has confirmed that the scheduled city championship basketball games will proceed as planned at the location.
Principal Lauzon reassured, “Safety measures have been implemented for the upcoming games, with the presence of Vancouver Police Department and Vancouver School Board staff, including representatives from visiting schools, to ensure the safety and support of all participants this week.”
The investigation into the matter is still ongoing.
