An intense 25-second altercation at a Vancouver café patio turned violent as a man pushing a stroller was left critically injured, lying in a pool of blood after being stabbed six times in the chest. The shocking incident, which unfolded on March 26, 2023, was captured on a video that was presented in B.C. Supreme Court during the commencement of Inderdeep Singh Gosal’s murder trial.
During the trial, Crown prosecutor Karin Blok emphasized that the key point of contention was determining the accused’s intent and whether it could be established beyond doubt that Gosal had intended to cause fatal harm to Paul Schmidt.
Gosal, who pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, was observed in the video wearing a grey hoodie and red pants as he made his way by train to downtown Vancouver that fateful day. Shortly after arriving at a coffee shop’s patio and taking a seat, a confrontation ensued between Gosal and Schmidt, resulting in a tragic physical struggle that left Schmidt gravely wounded.
Despite the unclear details of the verbal exchange that took place between the two men, the escalation of the confrontation was evident as the situation turned violent. Schmidt, after being stabbed, collapsed on the patio, surrounded by a disturbing pool of blood.
As the trial progresses, evidence, including the discovery of a knife with the deceased’s blood on it in Gosal’s possession, is being presented in court. The intense scrutiny of the video footage capturing the altercation sets the tone for the legal proceedings ahead, with the trial by judge alone anticipated to span approximately five weeks.
