Vancouver Island Prodigy Captures Hearts with Musical Ode to Tumbler Ridge

Amidst the recent tragedy in Tumbler Ridge, a young musician from Vancouver Island is shining a light of hope during a dark time, one melody at a time.

Thirteen-year-old Kairo Ellis from Cobble Hill is using his music to send love and solace to the grieving community, even though he didn’t personally know the victims of the tragic mass shooting on Tuesday.

Upon hearing the heartbreaking news, Kairo felt a deep connection to the loss and decided to channel his emotions into something positive. He recalls feeling overwhelmed by the tragedy while watching the news with his mom.

In a heartfelt tribute, Kairo performed a cover of Zach Bryan’s “Pink Skies,” a song that had helped him navigate his own grief when he lost a hockey teammate. Through his music, he aimed to offer a moment of respite for those affected by the tragedy.

To his surprise, Kairo’s tribute videos have garnered nearly a million views in the days following the shooting, resonating with people across the country. His intentions were simple yet powerful – to show support, love, and solidarity to the affected families and community.

Inspired by the bravery of 12-year-old Maya Gebala, who bravely shielded her classmates during the attack and is currently fighting for her life, Kairo dedicated a cover of “Something in the Orange” to her. The gesture reached Maya in her hospital room, prompting her mother to express gratitude for the touching tribute.

In a heartfelt message to Maya, Kairo encouraged her to keep fighting, emphasizing her strength and resilience as a fellow hockey player. He urged her to return to her loved ones, highlighting the community’s unwavering support.

Through his music, Kairo hopes to provide a small source of comfort amidst profound sorrow and remind the grieving community that they are not alone in their pain.
