“Is There Justice on the Horizon? B.C.’s Police Watchdog Considers Probe into Tumbler Ridge Shooting Incident”

In the aftermath of a tragic mass shooting in the small community of Tumbler Ridge in northeastern British Columbia, the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) is stepping in to determine if their mandate includes investigating the incident.

Last Tuesday, nine individuals, including the shooter, lost their lives in the heartbreaking event, while over two dozen others sustained injuries.

Jessica Berglund, the chief civilian director of the IIO, confirmed that they were informed by the RCMP and have deployed investigators to assess whether they should launch a formal investigation.

The IIO has stated that they are currently exploring the potential links between the actions or inactions of law enforcement officers and the tragic outcomes of the shooting.

If it is found that there is no direct connection, the investigation will be halted. However, if the criteria are met, a thorough examination of all available evidence will be conducted to unravel the sequence of events.

Berglund emphasized that the IIO’s involvement is independent of any ongoing investigations by the RCMP or other authorities. She expressed gratitude for the community’s patience as they meticulously carry out their preliminary work.

Furthermore, Berglund extended heartfelt condolences to all the families affected by the devastating shooting, emphasizing the deep sense of loss felt by the IIO.
