CAQ’s Fréchette Might Scrap Abortion Rights Clause from Quebec Constitution Proposal

Christine Fréchette, a potential successor to François Legault, is contemplating the removal of Article 29, a controversial provision in Quebec’s proposed constitution that focuses on safeguarding the right to abortion.

In a recent media briefing at the National Assembly, Fréchette stated, “If there isn’t backing for it, we may need to revise or eliminate it.”

Meanwhile, Justice Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette, who is championing the bill, remains firm on including Article 29 despite facing opposition from various advocacy organizations. Critics argue that enshrining abortion laws in the constitution could potentially threaten women’s reproductive rights.

Fréchette acknowledged the lack of support for Article 29 among women’s advocacy groups and emphasized the significance of this feedback. She expressed overall support for Jolin-Barrette’s legislation, pending resolution on this contentious issue.
