“Ukrainian-Canadian Filmmaker Ignites Wave of Solidarity in B.C. With Powerful Documentary”

A local filmmaker from Vancouver, Maxim Khomenko, is set to showcase his powerful war documentary, “Standing Free,” which delves into the heart of the Russo-Ukrainian conflict. Collaborating with the BCIT Ukrainian Student Club, Khomenko will screen his film this month as a fundraiser.

“Standing Free” offers an intimate portrayal of the resilience displayed by different generations of Ukrainians amidst the ongoing war. Khomenko, a Vancouver Film School alum, was inspired to create the documentary after witnessing the destruction of his childhood home in Kyiv due to Russian missile strikes in 2022.

The film features a diverse range of demographics from Ukraine, including children, parents, soldiers, and elders, providing a comprehensive view of the impact of the conflict on Ukrainian society. Khomenko’s firsthand experiences in various Ukrainian regions, filming alongside military units and donating essential equipment, enrich the authenticity of his storytelling.

The proceeds from the screening will be directed towards supporting the Ukrainian Armed Forces and the Maple Hope Foundation, a local Ukrainian non-profit organization. Attendees can also participate in an auction of war artifacts, adding a tangible connection to the realities depicted in the documentary.

President Anastasiia Dubyna of BCIT USC praised “Standing Free” for its ability to deeply immerse viewers in the lives of the Ukrainian people affected by the war. The emotional depth of the film resonated with audience members, transcending political and military narratives to highlight the human experiences at the core of the conflict.

Don’t miss the screening of “Standing Free” at Telus Theatre on BCIT’s Burnaby Campus on Feb. 24, 2026, at 5:30 p.m.
