An online memorial has been created to pay tribute to the victims of a recent tragedy in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., where eight individuals lost their lives in a series of shootings.
The British Columbia government has established this virtual memorial for individuals to express their condolences, offer support, and show solidarity with the affected community following the heartbreaking events.
In addition to the online platform, a physical condolence book has been placed in the Hall of Honour at the B.C. legislature building in Victoria.
Both the online and physical condolence books will be open for signing until February 20, with the messages from the online platform eventually being transferred to the physical book.
The tragic incident on February 10 involved 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, who took the lives of her mother, 11-year-old half-brother, five students aged 12 and 13, and a teacher’s aide at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.
Furthermore, efforts are underway to support the affected families and community in Tumbler Ridge. The Canadian Red Cross is collecting donations to address immediate needs, while United Way BC is focusing on medium- and long-term recovery. The Northeast BC Community Foundation is also gathering funds for community-led support initiatives.
