Goblins trio seize Montreal’s Centaur Theatre to deliver Macbeth with a twist

After hearing that a group of goblins were rummaging around the streets of Montreal’s Old Port, our CityNews crew quickly made its way to the scene.

We located a trio and can confirm they’re not your typical goblins, they’re taller and seem friendlier.

Although, we’re not sure how friendly just yet, after all they kept running off with our microphone!

Wug, Kragva and Moog told us in chorus: “We are not Tolkien goblins, okay?! What do we know about Tolkien goblins – he just loved to stereotype them – they’re all blood thirsty and stupid, violent, greedy!”

Setting aside their uncanny characteristics, we couldn’t help but wonder — what can they possibly be looking for? The answer came moments later as the trio took out a map that they said served to help them search for a theatre that would adequately suit their needs.

“Do you know where we could find a theatre? Ya where’s the theatre?” They asked collectively to patrons on the street who happened to cross their paths.

“Maybe we just keep going this way,” suggested Kragva as she pointed in the direction of Centaur Theatre just up the hill.

After setting their sights on the illustrious venue, the mischievous goblins entered the theatre in search of the perfect place to put on their own chaotic version of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, a classic tale of ambition, betrayal and madness — a seemingly perfect match for the humanoid creatures with a penchant for chaos and mayhem.

When asked why those chose Macbeth of all the bards plays, the trio couldn’t make up their mind.

“Because it’s the shortest!” said Wug.

“Oh and it has the most blood. Ya so much blood! Well maybe not as much as Titus Andronicus, but no one wants to see that,” Kragva chimed in.

True to their nature, the cunning and resourceful trio fully entered the theatre, without permission, and entered a room where they brainstormed a plan to commandeer the venue.

“Okay we snuck into the Centaur,” whispered Kragva. “We just need an audience,” she added, prompting a discussion between the three as to who they’d want to attend the show.

“Do we only want a human audience?” She went on to ask.

“Doesn’t matter to me. So, if there are elves, fairies, witches, wizards. It’s the Centaur Theatre, so if you’re a centaur just show up. Just buy two seats! All kinds are welcome!” Said Moog.

And since it’s not in a goblin’s nature to rehearse, they say they’ll be improvising Shakespeare’s typically three-hour play, but in half the time, until March 22.
