BC SPCA seizes neglected dogs from irresponsible breeder

The BC SPCA says it seized 13 miniature dachshunds from an “irresponsible breeder” operating on a property between 100 Mile House and Clearwater on March 19.

The dogs, ranging in age from 12 weeks to 12 years old, were found in small cages with bedding caked with feces and soaked in urine, and the majority did not have access to water.

Many were found with overgrown nails, with one of the dogs needing surgery to remove an embedded claw from its paw.

Almost all adult dogs are suffering from severe dental disease.

“The condition of these dogs’ teeth is unlike anything I’ve ever seen.” said Jamie Wiltse, regional manager of BC SPCA Animal Protection Services. “In all my years working with animals, I’ve never seen such severe dental disease.”

The property they were taken from had heat issues and no running water.

In addition to their health concerns, it was obvious the dogs were poorly socialized as well.

“The fact that they were more comfortable in their crates than around humans was sad to see. They seemed quite wary of human touch, but with patience and encouragement, they eventually warmed up to our animal protection officers,” said Wiltse.

The BC SPCA was alerted to the situation by a call to their helpline from an individual who had purchased a puppy from a breeder and was concerned about the welfare of the remaining dogs. The puppy had been advertised for sale through a popular online classified ads website.

The miniature dachshunds are currently receiving attention and medical care at a BC SPCA centre.

They are not currently available for adoption.
