Hundreds of people gathered in Vancouver Saturday for a “No Tyrants” rally that participants are calling a march for democracy.
The demonstration comes on the same day thousands of “No Kings” events were held across the United States, with many Canadians standing in solidarity.
“I’m shocked to see authoritarianism rise in the United States,” one participant told CityNews.
“Every week, it’s something new and something worse, and there’s not a lot we can do here in Vancouver. But when we have a march — you march.”
Many participants are calling on Canadian companies to cut ties with United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“Hootsuite provides social media services to ICE, GardaWorld staffs Alligator Alcatraz,” said Kalifi Ferretti-Gallon with Democracy Rising.
“We’re asking that these companies end their contracts with ICE. We’re also asking that Mayor Ken Sim — who refused to review a motion that explicitly banned ICE from FIFA this summer — explicity bans ICE.”
Protesters marched downtown, condemning the actions and policies of U.S. President Donald Trump and demanding change here at home.
“Sorry Donald, the throne’s already taken,” one protester said.
“Make America think again.”
