An indefinite strike began at 9 a.m. on Monday at Metro, specifically at the fruit and vegetable distribution centre in Laval, as well as at the head office.
The strike by the 550 workers also includes the drivers at the Mérite 1 warehouse in Rivière-des-Prairies.
This fruit and vegetable distribution centre supplies some 1000 Metro group stores throughout Quebec.
The union representing the Federation of Commerce, affiliated with the CSN, already holds a mandate for an unlimited general strike, which was adopted by 97 per cent of its members. The current strike will not necessarily be unlimited; its duration is indefinite, depending on how the situation evolves, the union announced on Monday.
Several points are in dispute: wages, the use of subcontracting for drivers, teleworking for head office employees, as well as health and safety issues at work.
Metro management has not yet issued a comment.
