18-year-old clocked at 156 km/h on Jacques Cartier Bridge

An 18-year-old driver is facing significant penalties after being caught speeding on the Jacques Cartier Bridge in the early hours of May 1.

According to the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), officers from the Cartier-Champlain highway patrol intercepted the vehicle heading toward Montreal’s South Shore at 156 km/h in a zone where the speed limit is 50 km/h.

The driver was issued multiple tickets, including a $1,993 fine and 24 demerit points for excessive speeding. He was also fined $524 and received four demerit points for driving after consuming alcohol, in violation of Quebec’s zero-tolerance policy for young drivers. An additional $187 fine was issued for driving in a prohibited area.

Police say the driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days, and the vehicle was impounded immediately.

Authorities are reminding the public that drivers under 22, including those with learner’s or probationary licences, are prohibited from having any alcohol in their system while driving.

The SQ says excessive speed remains one of the leading causes of fatal collisions on Quebec roads.
