Work has begun to transform Vancouver’s Science World into a giant soccer ball for FIFA

Work has begun on transforming a Vancouver landmark into a giant recreation of the official match ball of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The project will involve the installation of up to 131 customized panels on the city’s iconic Science World dome and will take around four weeks to install, depending on weather.

“Forty years after it first welcomed the world at Expo 86, the dome that now houses Science World is proud to be part of another extraordinary moment in Vancouver’s history,” said Tracy Redies, president and CEO of Science World.

“This unique installation is a bold feat of engineering and a testament to what is possible through creativity and collaboration. We are excited to welcome visitors from around the world and be part of an experience that will inspire and unite people.”

Destination Vancouver president Royce Chwin says the project is about creating a “globally iconic image that immediately connects Vancouver to the FIFA World Cup and showcases our city’s creativity and ambition.”

As well as the visual display of turning the building into the adidas Trionda, the facility will host a “Soccer & Technology from the FIFA” museum. This will run from May 15 to Sept. 7.

Work is expected to be completed in early June.
