The Montreal Police Brotherhood says allegations of racism involving members of a team assigned to Station 39 are “totally unacceptable and shocking” as the Montreal police (SPVM) continues an internal misconduct investigation in Montreal North.

Late Friday, Montreal police Chief Fady Dagher announced that two officers had been suspended, three others reassigned to administrative duties, and the remaining members of the immediate work team relocated as the investigation continues.

The SPVM has not publicly detailed the allegations but confirmed they include claims of racist conduct involving officers assigned to the Montreal North station.

In a statement issued Saturday, the Montreal Police Brotherhood said it had taken note of the allegations and reiterated that any form of racism is intolerable and contrary to the values of both the organization and Montreal police officers.

“What is alleged is totally unacceptable and shocking,” Brotherhood president Yves Francoeur said in the statement.

The union emphasized that respect for all citizens is non-negotiable and noted that the presumption of innocence applies to all members involved in the investigation.

The Brotherhood also said that the vast majority of Montreal’s approximately 4,600 police officers carry out their duties respectfully and in accordance with professional standards.

Citing its legal obligations, the union said it would not provide further comment while the investigation remains ongoing.

The SPVM has not indicated when the investigation is expected to conclude.
