The Surrey Police Board announced that it has started a financial review of the Surrey Police Service (SPS) for the 2027 budget.
The board is currently retaining an independent accounting firm to conduct the review.
Despite the SPS rapidly scaling operations over the past two years, they spent about $65 million below the budgeted amounts.
During the 2026 budget process, the board agreed to increase the SPS budget following questions from the City of Surrey.
“Our role is to ensure that we are providing the proper governance and oversight for SPS, and that starts with clear, complete picture of its finances,” said Perm Jawanda, Chair of the Surrey Police Board. “This review will give us the information we need to help build a budget we can stand behind in 2027 and beyond.”
The financial review will draw on input from key internal and external stakeholders to inform the 2027 budget submission and is expected to be completed by October.
“Ultimately, the Board is responsible for the budget that is proposed for SPS,” added Jawanda. “We need to have full confidence that the budget request to the City for SPS is rigorous and robust.”
