Red Coalition invites Montrealers to share their interactions with police amid racism allegations

An anti-racism organization gave a platform to Montrealers on Monday to discuss their experiences with police officers.

Community leaders, victims, residents, advocates, and members of the public were encouraged to speak at the press conference hosted by the Red Coalition.

The event at the Jamaica Association of Montreal focused on the impact of racial profiling, community concerns, accountability, and the experiences of individuals directly affected.

It was held against the backdrop of an ongoing investigation by Montreal police into allegations of racism and misconduct by officers at Station 39 in Montreal North. Sixteen members of the police service are implicated, including two who were suspended and could face criminal charges.

“For many of us, the events that have recently come to light involving officers assigned to SPVM Station 39 were deeply disturbing,” said Joel DeBellefeuille, the founder and executive director at the Red Coalition.

“But for many members of racialized communities, particularly Black communities, the allegations were not necessarily surprising. Because the concerns being discussed publicly today are concerns that many people, all of us, have been raising for years – concerns about racial profiling, concerns about unequal treatment, concerns about street sex, concerns about being viewed with suspicion, and not because of what they did, but because of who they are and what they look like.”
