Joseph Mery Arthur, a remarkable individual, celebrated his 110th birthday on Tuesday, becoming Canada’s oldest known man. Originally from Saint-Marc, Haiti, Joseph moved to Montreal five decades ago, with his ten children and later, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Among them is eight-year-old Olivia-Rose Simmons, who believes her great-grandfather’s longevity secret lies in keeping his mind active through cognac, books, and crosswords.
Joseph, however, attributes his long life to wisdom and moderation, emphasizing the importance of balance in all things. Despite his age, he remains independent, still engaging in activities like reading, although it has become challenging due to his failing eyesight. Joseph’s son, Harold, marvels at his father’s continued passion for sports, particularly baseball and tennis, and his strategic game knowledge.
Having worked as a public servant in Haiti and later at a bakery and the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Canada, Joseph immersed himself in the Haitian community, leaving a legacy of hard work and dedication. Harold reflects on his father’s sacrifices and commitment to family, acknowledging the values and principles Joseph instilled in them.
Despite Joseph’s exceptional journey, he humorously admits to once praying not to live so long but now cherishes the time spent with his numerous great-grandchildren. His family plans a private barbecue celebration to honor his birthday, with one attendee, Olivia-Rose Simmons, expressing the desire to live a long and fulfilling life like her great-grandfather.
