The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) is currently on the lookout for a male suspect following a violent sexual assault that took place late Monday night on a popular waterfront trail in Whitby.
The incident occurred at Iroquois Beach Park, near Gordon Street and the Waterfront Trail, around 10:15 p.m. when a woman was attacked while leaving the park.
According to investigators, the victim was walking along a sandy path leading northwest towards Gordon Street when she was accosted by an unidentified man. The suspect forcibly took her into a wooded area off the path, threatened her, and sexually assaulted her.
After the harrowing ordeal, the woman managed to break free and fled towards the road, where she flagged down a passing driver who promptly called 911 for help. Paramedics transported her to a nearby hospital, although specific details of her injuries have not been disclosed by the authorities.
The suspect managed to escape before law enforcement officers arrived on the scene. Despite an extensive search utilizing DRPS K9 and drone units in the area, the perpetrator remains at large.
Described as a Black male with shoulder-length cornrows and dressed in all-black attire, the suspect is still being actively sought by the police.
Authorities are appealing to anyone who was in the vicinity on Monday night to come forward, particularly those with potential footage such as cellphone videos, dashcam recordings, or home surveillance footage that could aid in identifying the suspect.
In response to the incident, law enforcement officials have announced plans to increase patrols in and around Iroquois Beach Park and the Waterfront Trail as part of their ongoing investigation.
