Numerous international students are facing uncertainty and displacement following the abrupt closure of two private colleges in Montreal and Sherbrooke.
The closure of Collège supérieur de Montréal and its affiliated campus Collège supérieur de Sherbrooke came after Quebec’s Ministry of Education declined to renew their license last week.
In response to inquiries from CityNews, ministry spokesperson Bryan St-Louis explained, “The decisions to not renew certain licenses for private vocational training institutions were based on the requirements of the Private Education Act and an evaluation of their compliance with these standards.”
St-Louis reassured that the ministry has been in contact with affected students to present alternative options for them to continue their education at other accredited institutions within Quebec.
He emphasized, “Our foremost concern is the welfare and academic progress of the students, ensuring the provision of high-quality educational services, and maintaining a seamless educational trajectory for them.”
The ministry, in a communication to students, announced that tuition fees would be waived for students transferring to specified schools.
For international students wishing to pursue their studies in Quebec, new study permits will be necessary. The Ministry of Immigration, Francization, and Integration (MIFI) is available to offer assistance to students during this transition.
