Tragic Hero: B.C. Helicopter Pilot Battling Colorado Wildfire Perishes in Weekend Crash

A tragic incident unfolded in southwestern Colorado as a helicopter piloted by a man from British Columbia crashed while combatting a wildfire, leading to his untimely death.

Nicholas Dale, a 56-year-old resident of Sooke, southern Vancouver Island, lost his life when his helicopter went down near Silver Jack Reservoir, located in a remote area southwest of Aspen. Dale had been assisting firefighters in their efforts against the expanding Gold Mountain Fire, which now covers approximately 148 square kilometers.

Moving photos released by the Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office on Monday capture the poignant scene of emergency responders forming a procession of vehicles to pay tribute to the fallen hero of the fire service.

Governor Jared Polis of Colorado expressed gratitude towards those bravely defending the state from wildfires, announcing that state flags will be flown at half-mast in honor of Dale once a memorial service date is set.

The helicopter involved in the accident belonged to Helicopter Express, a company based in Georgia. In a social media post, the company mourned Dale’s passing and mentioned that he is survived by his wife and two children.

As wildfires rage across multiple Western states including Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico, the firefighting efforts continue amidst challenging conditions. A total of eight other states, spanning from Alaska to Arizona, are also dealing with wildfire outbreaks.
