“Ghostly White Hearse Haunts Quebec Highways to Spotlight Driver Safety”

A white hearse adorned with messages promoting safe driving is touring Quebec cities during the busy construction holidays to raise awareness among motorists. The initiative by the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) aims to remind people of the importance of responsible behavior on the roads during this high-risk period.

The hearse, serving as a symbolic reminder of the consequences of reckless driving, invites citizens to sign it as a pledge to drive safely. Starting its journey in Montreal, the hearse will visit various cities including Quebec City, Saguenay, Rimouski, Trois-Rivières, and Saint-Sauveur.

Simon-Pierre Poulin, spokesperson for the SAAQ, emphasized the need for heightened awareness during the construction holidays, citing the increased risks associated with speeding and distractions. Last year, the toll of road deaths during this period doubled compared to previous years, with causes often linked to speeding, distractions, and impaired driving.

Poulin urged motorists to take simple yet impactful actions, such as avoiding distractions like cell phones while driving. He highlighted the dangers of speeding, which contributes to three-quarters of road fatalities during this time, especially emphasizing the risks for motorcyclists.

The SAAQ also emphasized the importance of motorcyclists wearing protective gear, given the rise in motorcyclist deaths due to speeding. The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) announced increased surveillance on roads and waterways throughout the construction holidays to ensure safety for all travelers.
