Randi and Joel’s Night Out Turns Terrifying After Encounter with Suspected Fake Taxi
Randi and her boyfriend, Joel, had a harrowing experience during a night out in Montreal on August 23 when they unwittingly got into what they suspect was a fake taxi.
Thinking they were hailing a legitimate cab outside the Pool Room on Saint-Laurent Boulevard, Randi and Joel soon realized something was amiss once inside the vehicle.
Despite the presence of a sign outside the car leading them to believe it was a real taxi, they became suspicious upon noticing the driver lacked proper identification.
“We kind of knew right away as soon as we stepped inside,” recounted Randi.
The situation escalated when the couple questioned the driver about a $10 fee and requested to be let out. However, the driver locked the doors, leading to a frightening altercation where he allegedly physically attacked Joel.
After a tense 10-minute ordeal, Randi managed to escape near Ontario Street, while Joel fled just before Sherbrooke Street as the driver sped off.
The incident left Joel’s guitar behind, which was later recovered and turned over to the police. The couple is now working on retrieving it.
Authorities, however, have been unable to confirm whether the vehicle was an illegal taxi. Despite no 911 call being made at the time, the lack of surveillance footage or a description of the driver has hindered any progress in the case.
Randi expressed disappointment in the lack of support from authorities and highlighted the need for passengers to be vigilant in discerning between legitimate taxis and illegal operators.
In response to the incident, taxi industry leaders raised concerns about the regulatory loopholes in Quebec that make it challenging for passengers to differentiate between legal and illegal taxis. They emphasized the importance of increased enforcement to prevent potential dangerous situations in the future.
Passengers were advised by the SAAQ to verify key identifiers before entering a vehicle, such as visible roof signs and posted fare grids for taxis, and government identification stickers for app-based services.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with unauthorized transportation services and the need for heightened vigilance among both passengers and authorities.
