Jean-Michel L’Espérance, a resident of Saint-Bruno, had an unexpected and unforgettable experience when what he initially thought was a scam turned out to be an incredible opportunity to become a Rogers Game Day Owner with the Toronto Blue Jays.
This unique experience took place on August 28 at Rogers Centre, where the Blue Jays faced off against the Seattle Mariners in an exciting game that ended with a victory for Toronto. L’Espérance’s journey began when he entered a contest initiated by the Blue Jays after receiving an email in May. Despite his initial skepticism, he ended up being chosen as one of the lucky Canadian superfans.
Accompanied by his wife, Cathy, and their son, Pierre-Olivier, L’Espérance’s day as a Rogers Game Day Owner included exclusive access to behind-the-scenes areas of Rogers Centre, such as the clubhouse and player facilities, batting practice, meetings with team executives, premium seats, and a shopping spree at the Jays Shop. The experience also gave him the opportunity to pitch ideas to Blue Jays executives.
Baseball holds a special place in the L’Espérance family, with their shared love for the sport spanning many years. L’Espérance, who has been actively involved with a local minor baseball association, described baseball as a family tradition.
The highlight of the day for L’Espérance and his family was getting up close and personal with the Blue Jays, including meeting players, exploring the dugouts and locker room, and witnessing the impressive facilities at Rogers Centre. The surreal experience of being on the field beneath the massive stadium roof and meeting pitcher Louis Varland left a lasting impression on them.
Returning home to Saint-Bruno, L’Espérance resumed his responsibilities with the local minor baseball association, where he finds joy in providing young players with uniforms and caps at the start of each season. The association, which has seen growth, particularly among younger players, following the Blue Jays’ recent success in the playoffs, brings him immense pride.
As a memento of his extraordinary day, L’Espérance received a “Game Day Owner” shirt, a cap, a prepaid card for expenses, and a baseball signed by Varland, which his son treasures. Reflecting on the experience, L’Espérance expressed gratitude for the unforgettable opportunity and acknowledged that it was truly a home run moment for his family.
