Scott Anderson, Member of Parliament representing Vernon-Lake Country-Monashee, has strong words for Pete Hegseth following the U.S. defense secretary’s controversial online post mocking the Canadian military. In response to Hegseth’s disparaging image of two female Cadet officers from the Cadet Training Centre in Vernon, Anderson stated, “You should be ashamed.”
Addressing Hegseth directly, Anderson emphasized the importance of responsibility and decorum that comes with being the Secretary of War for a powerful nation. He criticized Hegseth for choosing to insult non-combatants and intentionally bringing shame upon them in a public forum.
The Pentagon has defended Hegseth’s post, aligning with the Trump administration’s ongoing criticisms of Canada’s armed forces. However, the online backlash was swift and significant, with many condemning the attempt to belittle and target young cadets.
Critics highlighted the unfairness of attacking a youth program to undermine Canada’s military and condemned the disrespect shown towards women in the cadet program. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney denounced the comments from U.S. officials, stating that such behavior was beneath their positions.
The tension between Canada and the U.S. has escalated following failed trade negotiations, adding further weight to the controversy. Anderson, noting Hegseth’s military background, called out the former officer for taking a derogatory swipe at individuals in his constituency.
In a defiant conclusion to his response, Anderson echoed Hegseth’s caption with “this is real” alongside a Canadian flag, asserting his unwavering support for the integrity and honor of the Canadian military.
