After more than 60 years of service, the iconic CT-114 Tutor jets used by the Canadian Forces Snowbirds air squadron are set to retire this year. Their farewell appearance will take place at the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) in Toronto, marking the end of an era at the annual Canadian International Air Show (CIAS).
Major Maciej Hatta, the team lead of the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, expressed his gratitude for the CT-114 Tutor jets, noting their Canadian origin and the years of dedicated service they have provided. Despite their age, these aircraft have been diligently maintained to meet stringent airworthiness standards.
This year’s CNE will host the Snowbirds for the 55th time, but it will be their final show at the event for the foreseeable future, as the squadron will be temporarily grounded in Moose Jaw until new planes are introduced. Major Hatta remains optimistic about the squadron’s return with updated aircraft, emphasizing the Snowbirds’ commitment to thrilling audiences for years to come.
The Snowbirds’ second-to-last performance in the CT-114 Tutor jets is scheduled for the upcoming Grey Cup in Calgary this November. The federal government has announced plans for the modern CT-157 Siskin II aircraft to succeed the retiring Tutor jets, although a specific timeline for this transition has not been established.
The CIAS will showcase a total of 15 acts, with the Snowbirds’ performance serving as the highly anticipated grand finale of the show. Spectators can catch the aerial displays on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday from 12 p.m. to 3:40 p.m.
