One lane on the Honoré-Mercier Bridge heading into Montreal is currently closed, causing traffic congestion for northbound drivers. Concerns have been raised about the deteriorating state of this vital bridge connecting Montreal to Kahnawàke. According to reports, the southbound section, built in 1933, is in particularly poor condition as per the transport ministry’s inspection reports from October 2025. The recent closure of a northbound lane, constructed in 1961, due to a cracked beam highlights the urgent need for repairs.
In response to the closure, Transports Québec announced that only one lane will be open towards Montreal, leading to expected congestion during morning rush hours. To alleviate traffic woes, tolls on westbound Highway 30 will be suspended on weekdays from 5:30 to 9:30 a.m. Drivers experienced significant delays on Thursday morning, with some reporting much longer travel times than usual. The closed lane will remain shut until engineers determine the required repairs and establish a timeline for the work.
Motorists are advised to stay updated on the situation by checking Québec 511 and explore alternative transportation options such as carpooling, public transit, or using the Champlain Bridge.
