CEO of Major Projects Under Fire from B.C. First Nations for Ignoring Consultation Rights

CEO of Major Projects, Dawn Farrell, addressed the B.C. Assembly of First Nations today, acknowledging the frustrations felt by Indigenous communities over a lack of consultation. Despite challenges, Farrell expressed determination to bridge the communication gap.

During the annual general meeting, Farrell emphasized the need for open dialogue and understanding between her office and the First Nations. Although media presence was restricted during her speech, the event was live-streamed on the B.C. Assembly of First Nations YouTube channel.

Indigenous groups in B.C. are urging the government to establish nationwide guidelines for consulting with First Nations on significant projects. Leaders have raised concerns about the limited time given to review and provide feedback on projects like the Pacific Link pipeline.

While Farrell supports the idea of standardized consultation procedures, she raised questions about aligning these standards with the government’s fast-tracked project approval processes.
