A significant law enforcement initiative known as Project Atlantis II, led by the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) in Oshawa, has made a substantial impact with 490 arrests and the confiscation of illegal drugs. This operation, aimed at enhancing police presence in the downtown area, has been ongoing since April.
The authorities have described Project Atlantis II as a proactive effort to enforce the law and engage with the community to improve safety. The focus of this operation has been on combating thefts, the possession of stolen goods, and the sale of illicit drugs, which are major contributors to addiction, violence, and community disorder.
Over the course of the operation from April to September 2026, DRPS officers dedicated numerous hours to patrolling the city through bicycle, foot, and UTV patrols. Their diligent efforts resulted in 490 arrests, 808 charges laid, 406 provincial offence notices issued, and responses to 436 service calls.
Mayor Dan Carter of Oshawa commended the work of the officers involved in Project Atlantis II while acknowledging the ongoing challenges faced by the city. He emphasized that addressing issues such as mental health, addiction, and homelessness is crucial to ensuring community safety.
Project Atlantis II is a continuation of the initial Project Atlantis operation, which led to 267 arrests between April and July 2026, demonstrating the commitment of the DRPS to maintaining public safety and tackling criminal activities in the region.
