“Love Deceit Deepens in Ontario: Additional Charges for Romance Scam Suspect as More Victims Speak Out”

A man linked to a significant romance scam investigation in Durham Region now faces new criminal charges as more alleged victims have stepped forward, according to authorities.

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) reported that Salvatore Malandrino, 41, from Marmora, was arrested on August 31 following inquiries into claims that several women were financially exploited during romantic relationships with him.

Following a press conference on September 3, the public provided fresh information, leading to additional alleged victims reaching out to investigators.

Malandrino has been charged with one additional count of fraud over $5,000 and two counts of making a false statement to secure a loan. He is currently in custody.

These latest charges follow revelations of a complex romance scam purportedly targeting multiple women over several years. The investigation looked into allegations spanning from 2020 through November 2025. It was claimed that at least five victims were duped into giving large sums of money after Malandrino allegedly built trust through personal connections.

Authorities stated that the victims and the accused met through ordinary settings, such as a dog-training business and a local gym, rather than online dating platforms. Malandrino allegedly presented himself as a successful entrepreneur, business owner, and partner, making false declarations about his finances, business ventures, health, and future intentions.

Upon his arrest, Malandrino faced multiple charges, including fraud over $5,000, money laundering, possession of crime-obtained property, not complying with a release order, and presenting forged documents. Victims were said to have lost over $1 million during a five-year span.

Investigators suspect that more victims may exist and urge anyone who believes they were defrauded or financially misled during a romantic involvement with Malandrino to contact the police.
