City of Montreal Professionals Strike Impacts Service Hours
City of Montreal professionals have initiated an indefinite strike, affecting their work hours to exclude evenings, nights, and weekends. Despite the strike, essential services continue to be upheld.
The strike schedule is set from Monday to Thursday between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m., and then from Friday at 5 p.m. until Monday at 8 a.m. It officially commenced at 12:01 a.m. bridging Sunday and Monday.
The Syndicat des professionnelles et professionnels municipaux de Montréal, an independent union comprising 3,000 members, includes professionals specializing in various fields such as information technology, libraries, communications, finance, and more.
Initially disputed by the city on grounds of being a disguised partial strike, the Administrative Labour Tribunal ruled in favor of the strike’s legitimacy. Following a subsequent ruling that the union’s essential services list required enhancements for public safety, the union, led by president Anne Dorais, has agreed to the recommended modifications.
