STM Unveils Major Overhaul with 58 New Escalators Across Montreal Metro

The Montreal Transit Corporation (STM) has unveiled a comprehensive plan to upgrade 58 aging escalators across its metro system by 2031. This initiative will involve modernizing escalators at 17 metro stations, starting with the Jean-Talon station.

The decision to replace these escalators stems from their average age of 40 years, signaling the need for improved efficiency and safety for commuters. The overarching goal is to enhance the overall metro experience for passengers.

According to STM officials, this project is expected to minimize breakdowns, decrease service disruptions, facilitate quicker station navigation, and enhance accessibility for individuals with mobility challenges or carrying heavy items.

As part of the initiative, one escalator at Jean-Talon station will be temporarily decommissioned until 2032 to facilitate training for maintenance staff.

The upcoming schedule for escalator replacement includes work at stations like Iberville, Outremont, McGill, Acadie, Castelnau, and Côte-Vertu in 2028, followed by Peel station in 2029. Additionally, approximately 39 escalators will be installed for the Blue Line extension, contributing to a broader procurement effort valued at $200 million.
