The Quebec Teachers’ Union (CSQ) has been advocating for a major educational reform and has now made significant progress. Premier Paul St-Pierre Plamondon has tasked his new Education Minister to organize a general assembly on education, aiming for an early 2027 start.
In appointing Joël Arseneau as the Minister of Education, the Premier emphasized the need for a complete overhaul of the education system. Describing the task as enormous, St-Pierre Plamondon highlighted the importance of involving all stakeholders, especially students and parents, in the discussions.
Key topics of interest include reducing school dropouts, promoting vocational training, addressing school violence, and fostering social diversity within schools. The CSQ, during a press conference, reiterated its call for the general assembly and garnered support from various sectors including academia, politics, and business.
Seventy prominent figures, including media personality Ricardo Larrivée and pediatrician Jean-François Chicoine, endorsed a declaration in favor of the assembly. The CSQ, representing educators, emphasized the need for a comprehensive and inclusive process that spans from early childhood to higher education.
CSQ President Éric Gingras stressed the importance of thoughtful planning and consensus-building, addressing critical issues such as educational funding, student support services, and the structure of the school system. The union aims to create a collaborative platform for meaningful change in education.
