Evacuation orders and alerts related to the Mount Underwood wildfire on Vancouver Island have seen positive changes as firefighters note minimal fire activity. The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District, City of Port Alberni, and Tseshaht First Nation announced updates, lifting evacuation orders for China Creek Campground and Headquarters Bay, though they remain on alert. Additionally, the City of Port Alberni and Tseshaht First Nation reserves are no longer under alert. The Cowichan Valley Regional District has also lifted evacuation orders for several properties as the threat has diminished. However, the main road access to Bamfield, B.C., remains closed between the community and Port Alberni.
The BC Wildfire Service credits significant weekend rainfall for reducing fire activity at Mount Underwood, with an additional 8 millimetres of rain on Tuesday further aiding the situation. Although the fire remains listed as out of control, officials do not anticipate it exceeding its current 36-square-kilometre size. Of the approximately 60 active wildfires in British Columbia, only one has started in the past day, with 55 being declared extinguished in the last week.
