BC Ferries Braces for Record Crowds This Long Weekend!

As we approach the Labour Day long weekend, BC Ferries is gearing up for a surge in travelers, prompting the company to issue a warning about potential delays and the importance of making reservations in advance.

The ferry service experienced a significant influx of travelers during the same period last year, with over 90,000 vehicles and 270,000 passengers traveling on key routes connecting Metro Vancouver, Vancouver Island, and the Sunshine Coast. Across all routes and vessels, more than 200,000 vehicles and 500,000 passengers were recorded. Ceilidh Marlow, senior communications advisor at BC Ferries, anticipates similar numbers this year.

Marlow emphasizes that BC Ferries is working to accommodate the increased demand by adding extra sailings whenever possible. She advises travelers to check the schedule for availability and notes that an approximately 30% rise in vehicle traffic and a 50% increase in passenger numbers are expected during holiday weekends.

With a growing number of Canadians opting for domestic travel over trips to the U.S., BC Ferries has seen heightened activity. Despite the challenges posed by a record-breaking summer last year, the ferry service has been handling the current season smoothly, with no major mechanical or staffing issues reported.

For those planning to travel, Marlow suggests flexibility in timing, recommending early morning trips on weekends or choosing Tuesdays and Thursdays to avoid congestion. Throughout the summer, there has been consistent availability, particularly during off-peak hours when Saver Fares offer cost-saving opportunities.

As the busy season continues, BC Ferries remains vigilant and prepared, with the upcoming fall season expected to bring a gradual decrease in ferry traffic.
