Legault Ousts Pierre Dufour, Shakes Up CAQ Caucus

Tensions Run High as Premier Legault Expels MNA Ahead of Cabinet Reshuffle

Premier François Legault has made a bold move just days before the anticipated cabinet reshuffle by expelling Pierre Dufour, MNA for Abitibi-Est, from the CAQ caucus. This decision follows Dufour’s statement to La Presse hinting at a possible resignation to pursue the mayoral position in Val-d’Or unless a minister from the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region is appointed.

Addressing the situation, Premier Legault emphasized the importance of unity within the government team to meet the expectations of Quebecers. The region of Abitibi-Témiscamingue has not had representation in the cabinet since 2022, despite the CAQ holding all three ridings.

Currently, Jean Boulet, the minister of labor and MNA for Trois-Rivières, oversees the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region along with other responsibilities. The other CAQ officials in the region are Suzanne Blais and Daniel Bernard.

Meanwhile, Dufour’s criticism of the government’s focus on certain projects over regional issues has stirred controversy within the party. Last month, he questioned the prioritization of the “third link” project over other pressing concerns for the regions, stating that it has been a political liability.

The call for greater regional representation in decision-making has been echoed by local leaders and officials, urging the government to heed their voices. The push for a regional minister from Abitibi-Témiscamingue has been ongoing, highlighting the need for broader perspectives in governance.
