Lebanese-Canadian entrepreneur Mohamad Fakih stands firm on his controversial social media post denouncing supporters of Israel, sparking a heated debate and a petition to revoke his Order of Canada honor. Fakih’s bold statement, declaring that those backing Israel’s actions lack Canadian and humanitarian values, has stirred strong reactions from both supporters and critics alike.
In response to the backlash, Fakih asserts, “I will not be silenced. If you condone the killing of children, be it in Palestine or elsewhere, you are not aligned with Canadian principles.” Despite facing intense pressure, he remains resolute in his stance.
Former politicians, including Kevin Vuong, Lisa MacLeod, and Selina Robinson, joined forces to call for Fakih’s removal from the Order of Canada, citing his remarks as an affront to the dignity of Canadians. They argue that his comments warrant scrutiny in upholding the integrity of the prestigious award.
A petition urging Fakih’s dismissal has garnered over 13,000 signatures, with support from 30 ex-Parliamentarians. Despite the mounting pressure, Fakih, the founder of Paramount Fine Foods and a recent recipient of the Order of Canada for his entrepreneurial success and philanthropy, refuses to retract his statements.
Amid the escalating controversy, various parties, including the Canadian Muslim Public Affairs Council, have defended Fakih’s right to free speech. Emphasizing that his comments were a critique of those justifying documented war crimes, they maintain that his words do not constitute hate speech.
On the other hand, B’nai Brith Canada has accused Fakih of promoting hate and division, calling for a reassessment of his Order of Canada membership. They argue that his actions do not align with the values the award represents.
Despite facing threats to his personal safety and businesses, Fakih remains steadfast in his beliefs and maintains that speaking out against injustice is essential for future generations to emulate positive values.
