Lebanese-Canadian businessman Mohamad Fakih is standing firm on his social media post calling out support for Israel, sparking a controversy over Canadian values. Fakih’s statement, made on August 25, has led to a petition seeking to revoke his Order of Canada honor.
Speaking to OMNI News, Fakih reiterated his stance, stating, “If you endorse the harming of children, be it in Palestine or anywhere else, you are not aligned with Canadian values. I will not be swayed by any form of intimidation.”
In response to Fakih’s post, a group of former politicians initiated an online campaign to strip him of his Order of Canada title, denouncing his words as an attack on the dignity of numerous Canadians. The move, spearheaded by ex-MP Kevin Vuong, former Ontario MPP Lisa MacLeod, and former BC MLA Selina Robinson, aims to maintain the prestige of Canada’s highest civilian honors.
The petition, signed by over 13,000 individuals and supported by 30 former Parliament members, reflects a growing backlash against Fakih’s comments.
Despite facing backlash and threats following the petition, Fakih, known for founding Paramount Fine Foods, remains resolute in his position, emphasizing the importance of speaking out against injustice.
A letter from the Canadian Muslim Public Affairs Council and other parties, directed to Governor General Mary Simon, defends Fakih’s right to freedom of speech, asserting that his remarks were not hateful but rather a critique of those justifying documented war crimes.
On the other hand, B’nai Brith Canada has accused Fakih of promoting hate and division, prompting calls for a review of his membership in the Order of Canada. The organization’s representative, Richard Robertson, expressed that Fakih’s behavior is unbecoming of an Order of Canada recipient.
Throughout the controversy, Fakih has faced death threats and attacks on his businesses, suppliers, and landlords, underscoring the intense reactions to his statements.
