Mango, a beloved swan known for captivating audiences around the world, has passed away in Scarborough.
Mango, a majestic trumpeter swan who frequented the picturesque Scarborough Bluffs and the shores of Lake Ontario, was sadly euthanized after a three-week battle under the care of the Toronto Wildlife Centre (TWC).
The swan, identified as Y37, was receiving treatment for lead poisoning, likely due to ingesting harmful lead shot and fishing sinkers. He was brought to TWC on August 20th for medical attention.
Mango and his companion Charlotte gained widespread attention last year when a heartwarming video of their reunion following Mango’s recovery from a beak injury went viral.
Nathalie Karvonen, the director of TWC, expressed their deep connection with Mango, noting that he had been in their care multiple times due to injuries caused by fishing debris. Karvonen emphasized the dangers of fishing waste on wildlife, stressing that items like hooks, fishing line, and sinkers pose significant risks to animals.
In the wake of Mango’s passing, concerns have been raised about Charlotte’s future without her partner. Karvonen mentioned that Charlotte may mourn Mango’s loss and could potentially wait for his return before seeking another mate.
Karvonen urged the public, especially those who fish or spend time outdoors, to be mindful of their waste and to properly dispose of any garbage, emphasizing the importance of protecting wildlife and the environment.
The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association has been advocating for a ban on lead fishing products due to the severe impact they have on both animals and ecosystems.
