Montreal Celebrates Hockey Legend: New Île Bizard Bridge Named After Guy Lafleur

The City of Montreal Honors Hockey Legend Guy Lafleur with Bridge Naming

The city of Montreal recently paid tribute to hockey legend Guy Lafleur by naming a new bridge after him. Following the renaming of a highway in his honor two years ago, the iconic player will now have the Guy Lafleur Bridge connecting Île Bizard to the Island of Montreal.

In a special ceremony, Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante unveiled the new bridge’s name in the presence of Lafleur’s friends and family members. This recognition is a testament to Lafleur’s contribution to the community, as he lived on Île Bizard for nearly 30 years and was known for his active and caring citizenship.

Guy Lafleur’s remarkable career as a hockey player includes being the best junior player with the Quebec Remparts and dominating the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens for 14 seasons. He secured five Stanley Cups and numerous individual trophies before retiring in 1984. Lafleur remains the Canadiens’ all-time leading scorer and is second in goals behind the legendary Maurice Richard.

After a brief retirement, Lafleur returned to the game with the New York Rangers and then the Quebec Nordiques, where he concluded his career in 1991. His legacy was further honored with accolades such as the Order of Canada and the National Order of Quebec.

In addition to having his jersey retired by the Canadiens, Guy Lafleur was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame, and the Quebec Sports Hall of Fame, cementing his status as a true hockey icon.
