Ontario Doctors Secure Improved Compensation and Administrative Pay
Ontario’s doctors have successfully negotiated a new four-year agreement with the province, leading to enhanced general compensation and finally granting family doctors payment for administrative duties.
Initially awarded nearly a 10% compensation increase for the first year, doctors and the province further deliberated to finalize the remaining three years of the Physician Services Agreement.
The latest ruling from the arbitrator has granted an additional 7.3% over the upcoming three years, along with supplementary benefits for specific groups such as doctors working in children’s hospitals.
In response to the arbitration award, the Ministry of Health highlighted strategic investments aimed at motivating doctors to take on new patients and bolstering incentives for providing after-hours care.
The Ontario Medical Association has disclosed that the updated Family Health Organization model, in collaboration with the government, will now compensate doctors for time spent on administrative tasks and offer better payment for treating complex patients. This move is expected to aid in the recruitment and retention of family doctors.
According to the OMA, approximately 2.5 million individuals in Ontario are currently without a family doctor, while the government asserts that Ontario boasts the highest rate in the country of individuals connected to a primary care provider.
