The Broadway Subway Project Takes a Toll on Local Businesses
The impacts of the ongoing Broadway Subway Project have claimed yet another casualty, as The Greek announced its closure this week. The restaurant cited construction delays and disruptions as the main reasons for shutting its doors at this location.
Originally scheduled for completion in 2025, the Broadway Subway Project has faced setbacks, with the new target date now set for 2027. Business leaders fear that the bustling Broadway corridor may turn into a ghost town by the time the project wraps up.
Neil Wyles, the executive director of the Mount Pleasant Business Improvement Association, expressed concern, noting the numerous businesses that have been affected by the construction. Many establishments have had to close their doors, with no relief in sight.
On the west end of Broadway, Akbar’s Own Indian Cuisine is struggling to stay afloat. Owner Dhan Singh lamented the drastic decline in customers, attributing it to the construction at Broadway and Cypress, which has hindered visibility and accessibility to the restaurant.
Singh highlighted the challenges faced by his business, with significantly reduced foot traffic and a lease that extends beyond the projected completion date of the project. Despite the hardships, he remains uncertain about the restaurant’s future.
While financial assistance from the province or the City of Vancouver is not forthcoming, the city has introduced tax relief programs and additional parking spaces to support affected businesses.
