Markham is gearing up for the exciting 2026 Honda Indy race, and the preparations have already kicked off with significant changes at the Unionville GO station.
The renowned open-wheel auto racing series recently announced the relocation of the Grand Prix of Toronto from the downtown core’s Exhibition Place to Markham, a northeastern suburb. This move will see the race taking place later in the summer and residing in Markham for the next five years.
Mayor Frank Scarpitti revealed that Unionville GO Station will see the construction of a double pit lane in its parking lot, much to the delight of Indy fans. This means commuters disembarking at Unionville GO station will step right into the heart of the action, with the double pit lanes right in front of them.
As part of the preparations, 700 parking spaces at the station have been closed, causing some disruptions for GO transit commuters. Mayor Scarpitti mentioned that this closure will be temporary, lasting about a month. To accommodate the affected commuters, overflow lots have been arranged east of the station, along with parking spaces at the Markham Pan Am Centre and the nearby YMCA.
Excitement is building up for next year’s Honda Indy, scheduled to run from August 14 to 16.
