Abbotsford Police Launch Special Task Force to Combat Rising Extortion Crimes

The Abbotsford Police Department has launched a new task force to combat extortion threats in the city, particularly targeting South Asian business owners. This initiative, named “Operation Community Shield,” aims to address the recent surge in extortion-related incidents, including shootings and arson.

The task force comprises seasoned officers reassigned from the APD, focusing on implementing proactive measures to suppress violence and conduct targeted investigations to enhance public safety. Collaborating with federal and provincial authorities, including the newly established provincial extortion task force, the team seeks to strengthen efforts in tackling extortion activities within the community.

According to APD Chief Constable Colin Watson, the department is actively investigating 38 extortion cases reported between November 2023 and August 2025. Despite most incidents involving non-violent methods like threatening communications, such as letters, phone calls, or text messages, law enforcement is treating the matter with utmost seriousness.

Similar extortion incidents in the Lower Mainland region, particularly in Surrey, have raised concerns, with the Surrey Police investigating at least 44 cases this year alone. Authorities suspect some of these incidents may be linked to the India-based Lawrence Bishnoi gang and have urged for the group to be designated as a terrorist organization under Canadian law.

In response to the crisis, Surrey mayor Brenda Locke has announced a $250,000 reward for information leading to a conviction. Chief Watson emphasized that community involvement is crucial in addressing this issue and pledged transparency in keeping the public informed about ongoing investigations.
