For over two decades, the Potluck Cafe Society has been a beacon of hope and support for Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside community.
Beyond serving thousands of meals monthly, this non-profit organization goes the extra mile by providing employment opportunities, training, and a sense of dignity to individuals grappling with addiction, homelessness, and mental health challenges.
In addition to its meal services, the charity operates a catering company that channels its profits back into funding essential social programs.
Maz Artang, the board chair of Potluck Cafe Society, shared that the charity currently employs 46 individuals facing barriers to traditional employment. Unfortunately, due to a series of setbacks – including rising costs, the loss of key contracts, and a drop in donations – the organization is facing a financial crisis. A daunting goal of raising $100,000 by mid-October looms ahead to prevent the imminent risk of closure.
Artang emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “We need to raise a hundred thousand dollars by October 15th in order to keep our doors open. So it’s dire.”
Without the crucial funding, Artang expressed the grim possibility of having to lay off the dedicated employees who rely on Potluck for stability and support.
Bryan Wolstenholme, a longstanding member of the Potluck family, spoke about his personal journey within the organization. Starting as a prep cook and dishwasher, he highlighted the profound impact Potluck has had on his life, emphasizing the sense of belonging and purpose it has provided him over the past two decades.
Reflecting on the potential closure of Potluck, Wolstenholme shared his apprehension about starting anew elsewhere after investing so much of himself into the community that feels like home.
Jillian Hodge, who joined Potluck just two years ago, shared her transformative experience from working at a lemonade stand to becoming the event coordinator for various functions. She credited Potluck for equipping her with valuable skills and instilling a newfound sense of confidence in her capabilities.
Hodge underscored the importance of Potluck as a source of inspiration and possibility for individuals still grappling with challenges on the streets of Downtown Eastside, expressing her desire to continue contributing to the organization’s impactful work.
As Potluck Cafe Society navigates this financial crisis, Artang and the team are reaching out to Vancouver’s private sector for support while also relying on donations and catering orders to bridge the financial gap and secure the organization’s future.
