Canada Post employees across the nation have taken to the streets, setting up picket lines in response to what the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) deems as an assault on the postal service and its staff by the government.
In a strongly worded statement, CUPW declared a nationwide strike for all its members working at Canada Post, citing grievances against the government’s recent approval for significant cutbacks in mail delivery services over the coming years.
Nicole Chouinard, president of CUPW in Prince George, expressed dismay over the situation, noting that workers feel disheartened and aggrieved by the treatment they’ve received.
Describing the conflict as a modern-day David-and-Goliath scenario, Chouinard emphasized the union’s sense of being constantly under attack without respite.
Allegations were made by Chouinard against the Crown corporation, accusing it of lacking fair negotiation practices due to its belief that government intervention is inevitable in its favor.
She clarified that the current strike action is legally permissible as the union has maintained the right to strike since at least May.
