Nationwide Strike: Canada Post Workers Hit the Streets in Massive Walkout

Canada Post employees stage nationwide strike in response to government actions, CUPW announces.

Canada Post workers have taken to the streets, setting up picket lines across the country after the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) declared a nationwide strike. The union cited the government’s recent decisions impacting postal services and workers as the catalyst for their immediate action.

Just hours after the federal government approved Canada Post’s plans to scale back mail delivery services significantly over the coming years, the workforce mobilized in protest.

Expressing shock and disappointment at the unfolding events, Nicole Chouinard, the President of CUPW in Prince George, emphasized the feelings of sadness and frustration among employees.

Chouinard described the situation as a modern-day David versus Goliath conflict where workers have long felt overpowered and defeated. She lamented the continuous challenges faced by the workers, stating, “Every time we turn around, we are taking another hit.”

Accusing the Crown corporation of lacking sincerity in negotiations due to anticipation of government intervention, Chouinard highlighted the ongoing struggle for fair treatment.

Emphasizing the legality of the strike action, Chouinard underscored the union’s right to strike, asserting that the current protest falls within their legal rights.
